Bikes for all occasions
Took off for a bike ride on Sunday thinking I’d like to find 2 to 3 k of track where I could get some rhythm that was not Centennial Park. Wow; try the path from the end of Coward St Mascot through to Brighton le Sands via the Eve Street Cycleway. All the new comers, such as myself, were marvelling at how beautiful it was with lakes, reeds, frogs, the Cooks River and so forth, all set between the Airport and the Freeways! Not too straight and therefore families with young children could stretch out along the path without annoying the fast recreational riders. My 30k ride was perfect, could go on next time to Dolls Point or up the Cooks River to Homebush and back via Leichhardt.
Made me realise the different levels of recreation need different conditions. Trainer wheels avoid crossing roads and need parks for a picnic; 8 years old can handle the Bourke St bikeway with all its stops and starts and great destinations. A gentle off street workout needs less stops and more length, the Bourke Road down to Gardeners Road proves it can be done even in town (and with the new access via George St Redfern its accessible from the City). And that before graduating to ‘a dedicated lane’ which is more for the adventurous – try Marsh Street over the Cooks River, I don’t expect Max Moore-Wilton will be doing anything about that in this lifetime. And of course there’s some other missing links to complain about but I can see an interesting map coming along! (Oh and thanks Google Map, not a bad effort).
